ABout
Janne Haugen, PhD, is a fisheries ecologist, marine policy specialist, and sustainability strategist with more than a decade of experience connecting science, policy, and practice. Her work focuses on developing practical, evidence-based solutions to complex social-ecological challenges affecting fisheries, marine ecosystems, and sustainable ocean use.
Her career spans scientific research, nonprofit leadership, and consulting. She previously conducted research in support of NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center on ecosystem-based management, fisheries management, highly migratory species, and offshore wind. In her current role as Director of Development for a national seafood nonprofit, she leads strategic growth, develops and directs new research and partnerships, and advances initiatives focused on underutilized species, bycatch, and the responsible use of seafood resources, turning ideas into applied research, practical programs, and action. Through consulting, she applies this same combination of scientific rigor, strategic thinking, and cross-sector collaboration to complex environmental and regulatory challenges.
Dr. Haugen has led interdisciplinary research teams, advised international scientific and marine-policy groups, and brought together scientists, policymakers, industry representatives, and communities. She is the lead author of Marine Ecosystem-Based Management and is available for select consulting, advisory, and adjunct teaching opportunities.
Beyond the Science
Before pursuing a career in marine science, Dr. Haugen served in the infantry of the Norwegian Army, an experience that shaped her disciplined, collaborative, and solutions-focused approach to leadership.
Outside of her marine work, she is an experienced Vinyasa and Yin yoga teacher. She is registered with Yoga Alliance as a RYT 200 and has completed an additional 25-hour Yin Yoga certification. Her regularly scheduled classes can be booked through All That Matters Yoga + Wellness in Rhode Island.
